New research provides greater insight into why people with diabetes are at a greater risk of also getting cancer, according to a recent article in Diabetes in Control.
It’s been known for more than 80 years that tumor cells use a lot more sugar than normal cells. With a better understanding of this process, researchers are hopeful they can reverse it. Specifically, the researchers say they have disproved the notion that glucose and glutamine (amino acids) work separately when cells grow.
The research found that when glutamine is not present in the cell-development process, the use of glucose is also halted. The next step in the research is to try and control cell growth.
