Researchers Turn to Fruit Flies to Unravel Diabetes Mysteries

Researchers are turning to Fruit Flies to help decode the mystery of what genes cause Type 1 diabetes. In fact, in a recent study, researchers altered the genes in fruit flies to model the loss of insulin production, according to an article published recently in ScienceDaily.

The flies are also being examined to better understand Type 2 diabetes. Human genes and the genes of flies are very closely matched, according to researchers. Those same researchers say conducting research on flies may prove more valuable than in mice because the genes of humans and flies are more similar. They hope the findings will help lead to better treatments of diabetes.
