Pre-Diabetes Epidemic a Growing Concern Globally

Diabetes UK estimates that about one in 10 people in Scotland could have pre-diabetes, a condition that could very easily lead to Type 2 diabetes if drastic lifestyle changes are not implemented, according to an article from BBC News. The results coincide with a tidal wave of new incidents of pre-diabetes in the U.S. It is estimated that 57 million people in the U.S. have pre-diabetes, which is more than double the amount of people currently living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in the U.S. combined.

People with pre-diabetes are 15 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes.  People with pre-diabetes exhibit higher than normal blood sugar levels, but the levels are not yet high enough to classify them as diabetic. They also show signs of insulin resistance, another common trait of Type 2 diabetes.
