Rookie Philadelphia Phillies pitcher J.A. Happ is donating $20,000 to the Diabetes Research Institute, a group that is dedicated to finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
Happ won the Players Choice National League Outstanding Rookie award from the Major League Baseball Players Association earlier this week, according to a recent press release. The award comes with a $20,000 prize that the winner then donates to a charity of his choice. Happ, a native of Peru, said he chose DRI because he has a sister in her 20s that has Type 1 diabetes. “My family and I are hoping to see a cure in her lifetime,” Happ said in a press release.
Currently, Happ’s Phillies are tied with the New York Yankees with one win each in the best of seven World Series.
