Patients I.D. Diabetic Nerve Pain as Top Complication

The vast majority, or 85%, of those with diabetic nerve pain identified it as one of their top three diabetes-related complications, according to a recent online survey.

About one out of every five people with diabetes develop the condition, which is often brought on by poor blood sugar control that damages the nerves over time, according to a recent article in The Medical News. People with the condition often get debilitating throbbing pain in their hands or feet and can affect the person’s ability to fall asleep or conduct simple everyday tasks.

According to the survey, 84% of the patient -respondents discussed diabetic nerve pain with their respective doctors, and roughly 49% were taking medication for their pain. The survey is part of a new campaign called “Take the Next Step,” which is supposed to help people recognize the symptoms of painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (pDPN). The effort is sponsored by drug-maker Pfizer.

There are a number of FDA-approved drugs to help treat the symptoms of pDPN.
