Divabetic Uses Pop Culture for Diabetes Awareness

Six years ago, Max Szadek headed to his boss’ office only to find him laying on the floor, the victim of a stroke. His boss, Grammy Award-winning singer Luther Vandross, was a Type 2 diabetic and suffered from one of the disease’s many complications. He would die two year later.

Finding Vandross in that condition encouraged Szadeck to help others. In 2004, he created Divabetic, a program that combines entertainment, pop music and fashion, to raise awareness for diabetes. The program is sponsored by Novo Nordisk.

The program was presented last week, according to an article in the Post Gazette. It included 85 exhibitors, who provided product demonstrations and free samples. There was also a special workshop scheduled during the expo talking about topics such as diabetes and pets, people without insurance, and diabetes in the African-American community.

This event also gathered Medical professionals that answered questions and gave lectures and information about cooking, nutrition and exercise.
