Back to School Checklist for Parents of Diabetic Children

For parents of children with diabetes, September can be a stressful time. For large chunks of the day, school personnel will be responsible for overseeing their children. The blog Diabetes Mine published a “back to school” guest column from expert Allison Blass for parents of children with diabetes. Here is a summarized version. To view the full column, click here.

1 – Push for basic diabetes education and training and make sure that all school personnel who have responsibility for a child know how to recognize and treat hypoglycemia, or low-blood sugar levels.

2. Make sure teachers are familiar with the individual child’s hypo and hyper symptoms.

3. Discuss any special considerations for classroom events such as parties and field trips.

4. Become a resource for the school’s nurse and teachers.

5. Establish a plan detailing how and when the school’s nurse and/or teachers should call you.

6. Also make sure school officials are aware what diabetes management tasks the child is capable of handling him/herself.

My kids went to public school about 10 yrs ago and I was told flat out that my son should be in private school because the teacher felt she did not want to be responsible for watching him every minute nor did she get paid to do so . I had him removed from that teachers classroom immediately and found a teacher who had more compassion and understanding . I will not tolerate ignorance out of a public school system that we are paying for !!!
