Walnuts May Promote Heart Health for Type 2 Diabetics

Eating just two ounces of walnuts each day may help people with Type 2 diabetes significantly improve their heart health, according to a recent study from Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center.

Several previous studies have shown walnuts’ heart benefits for healthy adults, but this is the first study to focus on the benefits specifically for people with Type 2 diabetes. The study’s participants were examined over a 24-week period. They ate the walnuts with their regular diet for eight weeks, ate just their regular diet for eight weeks and had an eight week “washout” period.

Researchers claim that the participants experienced healthier blood vessels and endothelial function. Two ounces of walnuts equals approximately 350 calories. However, the study’s participants didn’t report any eight gain.

Findings from the study, which was funded by the California Walnut Commission and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, were recently published in the journal Diabetes Care.
