Roche Holding AG says a new study shows its experimental Type 2 diabetes drug works better than Merck’s popular Januvia drug, according to a recent article published by Dow Jones. The once-a-week injected drug taspoglutide is currently in a Phase-III study but is not currently approved for use in the United States.
While the once-a-week injection may be more convenient, the drug’s side-effects include nausea and vomiting. Analysts quoted in the article say the drug’s success will likely depend on its ability to limit the side effects. Eli Lilly’s Byetta drug has had trouble gaining marketshare because of of its side effects, which also include nausea and vomiting.
