Price Chopper, a grocery store pharmacy chain with 70 pharmacies in six states in the Northeast U.S. has launched a new program offering free drugs to patients with diabetes, according to an article from the Times Union. The move is the latest move attempt to win over and strengthen ties with customers in the increasingly competitive prescription drug market.
The supermarket chain says it will provide customers with free generic diabetes drugs metformin, glipizide and glyburide. All patients need to do is to present a valid doctor’s prescription for the drugs. As part of the program, Price Chopper will also offer customers nutritional education and free consultations with pharmacists.
Price Chopper says it is the first grocery store pharmacy to launch such a program. However, Florida-based Publix Super Markets has a program that is similar. Price Chopper hopes that by offering free generic drugs they will build customer loyalty. They also hope that because patients often have all their prescriptions filled in one place, those patients taking advantage of the program will bring additional business to Price Chopper.
