New Type 2 Diabetes Study Starting in the Womb

Researchers in Singapore are undertaking a new study examining pregnant women, their fetuses and children to try and understand the environmental and genetic factors that play a role in the development of Type 2 diabetes and obesity later in life, according to a recent article in the Medical News Today.

Researchers will study 1,200 pregnant mothers, their fetuses and the children up until the age of three years old. They hope to study the children longer if they secure further funding. Researchers say they are attempting to focus on the disease, not merely responding to its complications once the patient already has diabetes. Therefore, they want to know the benefit of lifestyle intervention prior to development of the disease.

The study also seeks to examine the “Asian Phenotype” because a large number of current studies are generated from the West. Asians have a might higher rate of developing Type 2 diabetes than Caucasians.
