Men Twice as Likely as Women to Have Undiagnosed T2 Diabetes

Men over the age of 50 years old are twice as likely as women to have Type 2 diabetes but not know they have it, according to an article published recently in Medical News Today.

Recent research from Diabetes UK finds that while middle age men are twice as likely to have diabetes as women, the reason why so many of them remain undiagnosed is because men, in general, are worse about managing their health than women. For the study, researchers examined 6,739 people in the U.K. between the ages of 52 and 79 years old. Approximately 7.45%, or 502 people, were found to have diabetes. Of the men found to have diabetes, 22% didn’t know they have diabetes. Of the women in the study found to have diabetes, 12% were unaware they have the disease,

Since diabetes can go undiagnosed for more than 10 years, about half of people with the disease have already suffered from complications at the time of diagnosis. The results were originally published in the journal Diabetic Medicine.
