Fishy Odor of Type 2 Drug Causing Some to Discontinue Use

The fishy odor of metformin, one of the most popular drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes, may be turning some patients off, according to an article published recently by WebMD.

The drug has few serious side effects, but the odor may cause some to stop using it. However, some are suggesting that the gross smell may be the cause of nausea in some patients. The drug is sold generically and under the brand name Glucophage. The smell reportedly varies significantly among the generic forms of the drug.

One alternative to discontinuing the drug is to try a film-coated, extended-release of the drug.
