Did Diabetes Contribute to Actress Brittany Murphy’s Death?

The shocking news that 32-year old actress Brittany Murphy died on Sunday has many in the media wondering what, if any, role her diabetes played in her death. An article published by The Improper explores the possibility as well as another in the Jacksonville Observer.

brittany-murphyMany outlets are suggesting she died of a heart attack as the result of deadly combination of prescription drugs, but her mother reportedly told paramedics that Murphy had a history of diabetes. Heart disease is a know complication of long-term diabetes. It is unclear exactly which type Murphy had, but celebrity gossip site TMZ and the blog Gather is reporting that Murphy suffered from Type 2 diabetes. Gather is also reporting that Murphy suffered from Asthma.

What is known is that the actress, who is known for her roles in the movies “Clueless,” “Don’t Say a Word,” “Little Black Book” and “8 Mile,” was pronounced dead after her mother found her collapsed in the shower on Sunday morning. Paramedics tried to revive her but were unsuccessful. On Sunday, prior to an autopsy, the coroner said Murphy’s death appears to be natural, fueling speculation that diabetes, a thyroid condition, or both played a role.

Murphy had reportedly been experiencing flu-like symptoms for several days leading up to her death. Against the objections of Murphy’s husband, an autopsy is scheduled today, but the results won’t be available for weeks.
