Big Butt, Thunder Thighs May Aid in Fight Against Type 2 Diabetes

A muffin top may be much worse for your health than thunder thighs and a big caboose, according to a recent article published by MSNBC. In fact, fat around the hips and thighs may actually help in the right against diseases, including diabetes.

The findings come from a review of several studies probing the relationship between health and fat around the stomach, hips, thighs and butt published in the International Journal of Obesity. Researchers now say they must identify how the body decides to distribute fat throughout the body.

Researchers know that stomach fat has been found to release cytokines, which are linked to insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. In contrast, researchers believe fat around the hips and thighs produces disease-fighting hormones. These fats also store fatty acids, preventing them from being stored in organs.
