FDA May Pull the Plug on Avandia Study; Drug’s Future in Question

The FDA is thinking about curbing a trial that compares controversial Type 2 diabetes drug Avandia with Actos, another drug in the same class, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal.

While there have been conflicting reports about the risks of Avandia, several studies have linked the drug to heart attacks. The agency now is considering halting the trial. The Journal article notes that if the trial is stopped, the agency will consider asking GlaxoSmithKline to stop selling the drug.

Some scientists argue that it is unethical to put more people at risk for this study.
