Teen Seeks to Raise Cash for a Cure in Every Zip Code

One teenager with Type 1 diabetes is setting out on a monumental task aimed at raising diabetes awareness and funds. Called “Zip the Cure”, the goal is to raise $100 in each of the 42,085 zip codes in the United States, according to an article published in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

The effort is the brainchild of Monica Oxenreiter, 15, and her older brother John and is an official third-party fundraiser for the non-profit group Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Although the push launched on World Diabetes Day (Nov. 14, 2009), its really been a four-year effort, says Oxenreiter. So far 68 zip codes (17 of them in Pennsylvania) in 20 states have reached the $100 mark.
