Scantily-Clad Runners Brave Bitter Cold for Diabetes

Hundred of Chicagoans braved the bitter cold this past weekend, running down the street in next to nothing all in the name of diabetes.

The event is called the Santa Speedo Run and the proceeds go to the Chicago Diabetes Project. Last year the event raised $5,500. The race is a little more than a mile and took place on Rush Street in Chicago and finished on Michigan Ave. Participants were encouraged to wear holiday themed speedos, although runners wearing any holiday-themed clothing were welcomed. Many donned Santa hats, red or stripped bikinis and speedos.

While some participants got others to sponsor them for the event, the basic cost of entry was $40. That fee included a three-hour open bar and snacks at the bar Shenanigans before the race. There was also a Flip Cup tournament, costume contest and “North Pole” dancing. Racers were to arrive at the bar and strip down to their speedos at race time.

The bar also accepted funds for those wanting to help raise money, but not run. The video immediately below is some footage from this year’s event. Below that is a Santa Speedo Run event held in Boston last year. It is not immediately clear the charity the Boston event was supporting.
