With diabetics growing sharply all over the world, the number of women heading into pregnancy with the disease and those getting gestational diabetes during pregnancy is on the rise. Diabetes can cause complications during delivery – such as the baby being too big — miscarriages, birth defects and health problems for mothers, according to a report in USA Today.
These risks can be lowered with strict blood sugar control, keeping at a healthy weight and awareness counseling before birth. However, experts say women are not getting the needed counseling.
Diabetes impacts about 5 out of every 1,000 women ages 18 to 44, according to the Center for Disease Control. Gestational diabetes occurs in about 1 out of every 25 patients, according to the USA Today report.
