Researchers have identified a previously unknown portion of the insulin receptor, which is a protein on the cell’s surface that binds with insulin.
Understanding how insulin, the hormone that regulates sugar levels in the blood, works with the insulin receptor is important because it may lead to new diabetes treatments, according to an article from Science Daily. That’s because it may allow scientists to create drugs or treatments that mimic insulin.
In 2006, researchers revealed a significant part of the structure of the insulin receptor. The new research builds on that discovery.
