Eli Lilly to Offer Smaller Insulin Vials to Hospitals

Drug-maker Eli Lilly and Company said it is now making smaller vials of insulin available to people with diabetes being treated in hospitals. The new vials contain just 3 milliliters (300 units) of Humalog or Humulin. That compares to traditional bottles of the drug, which contain 1,000 units. The new, smaller amounts are intended to give hospitals more flexibility when storing, delivering and distributing the drug.

The company will being providing the new, smaller vials to hospitals in January. However, it will also continue to offer the traditional 10 milliliter vials as well as its Humalog KwikPen, an injection device that is prefilled with insulin and looks kind of like a pen.
