Scientists say they have developed a drug that can halt Type 1 diabetes n just six days, according to an article from the Press Trust of India. The research is published in the journal Diabetologia.
The drug is called Otelixizumab and addresses the autoimmune component of the disease. In people with Type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own insulin-producing beta cells. Insulin is the hormone that regulates the level of sugar in the blood and is necessary to live.
Scientists say the new drug switches off the immune system’s “self-destruct” button. The drug is taken once a day for six days and should be given as quickly after diagnosis as possible. The drug is currently in clinical trial.
