It takes courage to manage this disease for someone else.
Parents are often frightened to leave their child with a babysitter as this can be a stressful event rather than an oppertunity for some recharge time or for attending an event.
However, there is now a free service that can match parents with a babysitter in their area and these people have experience with diabetes.
The service was launched more than nine years ago in Manhattan.
The founder a teenager called Kimberly Ross decided to start the service after she overheard a couple complaining they hadn’t gone on a date in a year and half since their child was diagnosed with diabetes.
Ross who has Type 1 diabetes thought she would be the perfect fit for the family.
Demand for her services grew and Ross decided to create a network of teenagers with similar skills and circumstances.
In 2007, the network of sitters created a website for the group and modeled it after Craigslist.
The sitters that are offering their services can post a profile and parents looking for a sitter can search the site by locale.
Rates are negotiated directly between the sitter and the families.
Now is there such a service in Australia? If so let me know (drop me an email) and I will include it here.
