New research finds that a common “chaperone” protein could lead to a cure for the loss of feeling in diabetics’ limbs. The study, in the American Society for Neurochemistry’s Neuro, shows the protein, Hsp70, can reverse the loss of nerve function in mice with diabetes, according to a summary in Science News.
The researchers from the University of Kansas say the findings could help in developing treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy, a common diabetes complication that can be painful as well as causing numbness and the death of sensory neurons in the extremities. It is caused by increased blood glucose levels, and current treatments are limited to heavy glucose control and pain management.
