The average American consumes 22 teaspoons of added sugar each day, which equates to about a half cup of sugar or 355 calories, according to an article in Diabetes Health. However, the American Heart Association (AHA) says the average woman should have no more than six teaspoons, while men should limit themselves to just nine teaspoons. That’s because consuming too much sugar can lead to cardiovascular problems and diabetes, according to the AHA.
‘Added sugar’ is sugar that is not naturally a part of the food, meaning it is added during the processing or cooking of foods. Avoiding items like soda can go a long way toward achieving the goals set by the AHA. After all, an average 12-ounce can of regular soda contains about 8 teaspoons of sugar.
